Bouncing beats, smart lyrics, fluid harmonies--add some funky flow and you’ve got the Jersey City-based trio Funknasty.

Liz Labeth Francesca, Vanessa Freedman and Ian Kirkman are making music that is serious but lighthearted, catchy and thought-provoking.

Sisters Liz Labeth and Vanessa met Ian at a New Year’s Eve party four years ago. In the beginning, they hung out and spent hours together introducing each other to new sounds. Just for fun, they began occasionally working on a few songs, recording on a 4-track in Ian’s bedroom. Liz Labeth and Vanessa sang hooks and background vocals and JD kicked the rhymes.

After playing a few of their creations for some friends, the positive feedback they received prompted them to start getting serious about the music they were making. The group dynamic shifted, and all three took on equal roles in the conception and writing of songs. They began to cultivate a sound that wasn’t any one definable genre, but distinctly Funknasty. The varied musical influences of the three combined to create a unique sound that manifests itself anew with each successive track.

They have been featured on two local cable shows and have spent the last year recording and playing around the New York City club scene.

From beat-making to producing, from recording to writing, this self-taught trio has been hard at work honing their skills. This do-it-yourself attitude, combined with their collective love of music keeps them constantly striving to take their craft to the next level.
